Mongabay - A new estimate by the UN FAO estimates that one billion people are currently going hungry: the highest number in history.  Global collaboration will be needed to feed the growing number of hungry people.

Scourge of the Forest: Disposable Coffee Cups

Green Upgrader - Disposable coffee cups are responsible for the destruction of 6.5 million trees each year.  The cups account for 250 million pounds of waste - but it doesn't have to be this way!  Invest in a reusable travel mug to show off your eco-conscious lifestyle.

Green Companies More Recession-Proof

World Changing - According to a new study that tracks the value of sustainability during the recession, companies with a 'true commitment' to sustainable practices are weathering the downturn better than their non-green rivals.

Bridge Between Private and Public Transport; Tires made of orange oil; Solar aircraft to circumnavigate the globe; Lemon-juice & water powered clock; Fake trees helping to clean up CO2

A Bridge Between Private and Public Transport. It’s a small non-polluting vehicle that not only works on a giant organized system that reduces traffic and travel time to a minimum, it’s made to encourage car-pooling as well. The vehicle runs on Li-On batteries, recharged by solar panels on the roof of the vehicle. The batteries can also be charged at any number of special zones in the city through induction charging. Love this idea and wish we would see it in cities everywhere!

Tire Made of Orange Oil Uses 80% Less Petroleum. Yokohama’s new Super E-spec tire, which is made in part from oils extracted from orange peels, is composed of 80 percent non-petroleum materials and has improved rolling resistance, meaning it is more fuel-efficient.

Solar aircraft to circumnavigate the globe. The plane is made out of carbon fiber materials, has a wingspan of about 200 feet, and it’s covered with over 12,000 solar cells that power four individual 10-horsepower motors. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to be the test pilot for this plane!

Sneak Peak at Dwell on Design… Reclaimed Space

Jun. 29, 2009 |

The Dwell on Design show is exceeding our expectations. Eye candy everywhere! We love the Reclaimed Space house and are honored to have created the beautiful interior that echos the story of the house - reclaimed, repurposed, restyled.

livingThe house is made from reclaimed materials, including 100 year-old wood from delapadated barns that have seen a glorious rebirth. Most of the furniture in the house are pieces that we sourced from eBay and had Ekla Home reupholster with natural tapped latex, covered in either recycled PET from Valley Forge, Mod Green Pod’s organic cotton or Q Collection’s organic wool fabric. Ok, way too many details to share, but stay tuned; many photos and stories to come!

Rock on San Francisco: The Nation’s Most Comprehensive Recycling Program

This post contains additional media. Click here to view the full post.

I just read that San Francisco, in another moment of environmental health leadership (brilliance, I would call it), just launched the most ambitious recycling program in the nation. For a city that already diverts 72 percent of its trash from landfills, San Francisco didn’t sit on its laurels. Mayor Gavin Newsom promoted the law that adds mandatory composting to the program and forwards the goal of achieving 75 percent diversion and zero waste by 2020.
