Mary graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in History in 1986, and from the University of Michigan’s law school in 1989. She practiced litigation for 2 years at a private law firm in Washington, D.C. and then moved to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Enforcement, where she worked for 6 years, including as a Enforcement Branch Chief. Mary and her husband moved to London, England in 1997, where she was an Executive Vice President in the Compliance/Legal Department at Salomon Brothers (then Salomon Smith Barney, then Citigroup) for 2 years.

After Citigroup, Mary worked for the UK Soil Association, where she worked on policy and advocacy issues, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In 2001, Mary and her husband moved back to the US, to California to be near their extended family, when she became pregnant with twins, Sophie and Dominic.
