But lately, the discussion has turned serious, as doctors, researchers, and other health experts focus on how stress contributes to serious illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Stress is our reaction to any situation that frightens or worries us. Basically, it's our body's natural protective response to a threat. (Picture early humans on the watch for predators.)
