Despite connections between the sweetener aspartame and cancers (leukemia, lymphoma, and breast cancer specifically) the FDA is rejecting calls to take a closer look at the carcinogenic little chemcial. DemocracyNow (www.democracynow.org) reports:

"FDA Rejects Aspartame Review Despite Study Showing Possible Cancer Link
And finally, the Food and Drug Administration is rejecting calls for a review of the sweetener aspartame despite a new study suggesting links to cancer.

Voluntary human testing on the effects of pesticides.

The environmental protection agency (EPA) under the Bush administration (after a 1998 moratorium under the Clinton Administration) now urges chemical pesticide producers to test their pesticides on human volunteers.

Though a little old, I found a few different articles on this issue. Check them out:

foxnews.com, "EPA to Allow Pesticide Testing on Humans" http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,140334,00.html

Chemical Risk = Financial Risk

All the chemicals that go into the plastics of toys, babybibs, and lunch boxes create toxic risk to manufacturers as well as the consumer. In the past year, investors have woken up to this issues: why invest in something if the growth of products and profits (exactly what investors want) threatens to decrease the consumer base(what investors dread). The sustainability (health) of the consumer base is threatened when they come in contact with the product (nasty chemicals).
This all seems confusing of course, but luckily thre are people to help us out with this; to unite shareholders to pressure large companies and to inform us when companies are in fact addressing their unsustainable ways.

biblical arcs and terrorizing evironmentalists

This "global war on terror" has provoked global outrage, political divide and massive confusion. Confusion that leads to questions, questions like "what is terrorism?"
Well according to a judge in Oregon, terrorism is a series of arsons created by a group of uncreative, unarticulate environmentalists and animal rights folk. These folks (nine individulas of the Earth Liberation Front that admittedly commited arson on industrial plants in 1985 as a way of communicating their concerns to the man) better thank their lucky stars that they are being tried under 1985 law, if this had happened in 2002, they'd be on some unmarked prison boat somewhere listening to neverending Brittany Spears at high volume, being denied the right of attorney or trial.
So what is terrorism? and what lines of communication are so muted that people looking to save the earth are blowing up buildings?

And then there's the one about the environmentalists who are building an Arc to rival Noah's to demonstrate the potential effects of Global Warming at the G-8 Summit in Turkey next month.

clinton gore '07

okay, so they're not running for office, and yes I know there isn't even an election this year. Yet, I believe that the clinton gore team deserves a special public "thank you," for what they have done since leaving office, that dreary, fundamentalist-laden, enivronmental-value-void day seven years ago when our current president took office. Since leaving office however, the Clinton Gore team have used their name power and access to powerful people around the globe to do some environmental great.

It's exciting to be able to say "oh you know Al Gore's movie.." with confidence that the other person surely does. I have seen the film, but even those people who have not, recognize the important contribution it has made to public awarenss of global warming and ways to shrink our carbon footprints. Bravo!

And The Clinton Global Intiative, founded in 2005, has worked to bring "together experts and leaders to discuss solutions to major world problems." "Major world Problems." Yes, that does include Global Warming and Clinton's intiative is acting. www.clintonglobalinitiative.com

Some details: "Sixteen cities around the world will begin cutting carbon emissions by renovating city-owned buildings with green technology under a program spearheaded by former President Clinton's foundation."

"Clinton's foundation described details to The Associated Press ahead of the announcement. Major global banking institutions have committed $1 billion to finance the upgrades of municipal buildings in participating cities, which include New York, Chicago, Houston, Toronto, Mexico City, London, Berlin and Tokyo.

"The makeovers will include replacing heating, cooling and lighting systems with energy-efficient networks; making roofs white or reflective to deflect more of the sun's heat; sealing windows and installing new models that let more light in; and setting up sensors to control more efficient use of lights and air conditioning."

natural antibiotics? (advice needed)

All it took was one moment to turn my gaze off the trail in front of me. At running speed I dove into the ground, successfully scrapping up my right side and filling my clothes with dirt, rocks and leaves. I'm not the most graceful person, but this hasn't happened to me in a while. Even worse, I had just passed somebody (a slow walker) on the trail, the same person who rushed over to help following the spill.
I think it was a blend of adrenaline and embarassment that forced me to get up, start running again, and not stop until I got home.
I washed out the abrasion on my arm about 45 minutes later, only a few hours after that my inner upper arm started getting sore; I figured this was due to bruising from the initial impact.

So perhaps you've heard:

"BOULDER, Colorado, April 30, 2007 (ENS) - Arctic sea ice is melting much more quickly than projected by even the most advanced computer models, a new government funded study has found. Comparing actual ice observations with climate models, the scientists conclude that the Arctic could be seasonally free of sea ice as early as 2020. "

earth day inspiration

When I was six I created what I believed to be my life’s masterpiece. It started as a mere paper mache globe with blue paper for the oceans and green for the land. After gluing tan bark from the school playground to make mountains, glitter sunshine, and cotton ball clouds, I beamed with pride at the product of my creativity. I felt inspired; this was my first real Earth Day! Though the environment’s inspiration and influence on my life manifests differently now, I am always thankful for that special day that celebrates what connects us all, the Earth.

cleaner transportation

pluginamerica.com check out ths website of information and activists to help the united states move toward cleaner modes of individual transport. for more, check out the mysterioumentary: "who killed the electirc car?" from "imdb.com" With gasoline prices approaching $4/gallon, fossil fuel shortages, unrest in oil producing regions around the globe and mainstream consumer adoption and adoption of the hybrid electric car (more than 140,000 Prius' sold this year), this story couldn't be more relevant or important. The foremost goal in making this movie is to educate and enlighten audiences with the story of this car, its place in history and in the larger story of our car culture and how it enables our continuing addiction to foreign oil. This is an important film with an important message that not only calls to task the officials who squelched the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, but all of the other accomplices, government, the car companies, Big Oil, even Eco-darling Hydrogen as well as consumers, who turned their backs on the car and embrace embracing instead the SUV. Our documentary investigates the death and resurrection of the electric car, as well as the role of renewable energy and sustainable living in our country's future; issues which affect everyone from progressive liberals to the neo-conservative right. i received this today: You and I know that global warming may be the greatest threat that civilization faces. Now we need to wake up Congress and the Bush Administration to this fact. On April 14, we'll be sounding the alarm – as thousands of people across America take part in Step It Up rallies and gatherings. Inspired by environmental author Bill McKibben, these climate change gatherings will take place in America's most iconic places – on top of the melting glaciers on Mt. Rainier, on the levees of New Orleans, and even underwater on the endangered coral reefs off Key West.
