Planning to eat well

By Rob | Jun. 18, 2007 | 0 Comments|post a comment

I find that one of the hardest challenges of eating well, is planning well. Preparing healthy recipes means keeping a stocked frig and pantry. So, a menu plan and shopping plan can really help set you up for success when trying eat more healthfully.  Naturalpath has a lot of low fat and fast recipes for quick meals without a lot of planning.

Another fun resource are the Cooking Light year end recipe books. These compilations, have all the recipes from the year's magazine and they're organized by season. This makes it convenient to pick out seasonal recipes and devise a shopping plan. Basically, I just sit down with the book and pick out about five dinner recipes that sound interesting. I make an ingredient list and add it to the week's shopping list. I've found these recipes relatively easy to make and really very good.  Give it a try!

Vegetarian and Low Calorie Study

By Rob | Jun. 18, 2007 | 0 Comments|post a comment

A recent (May 24, 2007) Scientific American article discussses a new study's findings that overweight adults who were instructed to focus on lower-calorie foods lost more weight than their peers who were simply told to cut their overall calories. A team from The Pennsylvania State University reported their findings in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Apparently one of the main attributes of vegetables and friuts for wieght loss is their relative high water content. And while this is pretty interesting stuff, it just further underscores the importance of sticking to basics when trying to lose weight. Bring on the fruits and vegetables...

Benefits of Mediterranean Diet

By Rob | May. 16, 2007 | 0 Comments|post a comment
Today Medpage reported recent findings about the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet. The article,  'Mediterranean' Diet Reduces COPD Risk discusses the findings from a 1986 -1998 study that enrolled over 50,000 male health professionals and found reduced risk of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

I found the article interesting, as I tend to gravitate towards a typical Mediterranean diet. Some of my favorite recipes and dining experiences come from this region. High in fruits and vegetables, the Mediterranean diet seems to celebrate the seasons. The fresh tomatoes and cucumber in a Greek salad always makes me think about summer time. Here's a simple recipe to make yours today.

Enjoy!

Let the conversation begin

Hello- my name is Rob Goldman and I head up product development for naturalpath.com.  I was first drawn to Naturalpath because of the importance of finding credible alternative health information online - especially at a time when the internet, with all it's strengths, can be a source of overload and confusion. There's so much information out there, it's often hard to know what's good and what's not.  Researching and reading alone can take a lot of time (something we're all short on) but more importantly it doesn't take advantage of some of the emerging potential of the online experience - community.

Water, Water Everywhere and Nary a Drop to Drink!

By Rob | Feb. 10, 2007 | 0 Comments|post a comment
Drops in a bucket? Well they add up. Are you doing everything you can to save water? Here's some tips:

1. Educate your kids on how important it is to save water and show them how they can help.

2. Wash your dishes in a sink or basin of water, instead of washing them under a running tap in an unplugged sink.

3. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth, save or soap your hands

4. Flush your toilet only after several uses.

5. Install a low-flush toilet or put a brick in the tank of your high-flush toilet to reduce the water need to fill the tank.
