The Daily Five

Volkswagen’s radical 238mpg concept car may actually reach production; another blow to first generation biofuel; and a low-energy, strikingly green city takes root in the heart of Big Oil. The weekend is in sight — welcome to the Friday edition of The Daily Five.

VW to Sell 238mpg, 650lb Carbon Fiber “1L” Diesel in 2010 : Volkswagen — the original People’s Car — figures people would like to keep driving, despite dire predictions of runaway energy prices. The German auto manufacturer says it intends to bring a 238mpg, ultra-lightweight, ultra-aerodynamic diesel two-seater to market. Even more remarkably, VW hopes to do this in just two years. The 8.5 hp coupe would be designed from bottom to top for fuel efficiency. (Next Energy News)

Stillborn: French gas stations chain stops selling E85: The wheels are coming off for ethanol. French gas station chain Système U is suspending sale of E85 ethanol-added fuel. Why? Nobody will buy it. (Autoblog Green)

The Daily Five

Antarctica may not be warming as fast as computer models project; windpower and solar companies boom; and Wal-Mart offers state government free expert energy audits. It’s your Thursday edition of The Daily Five:

Climate Models Overheat Antarctica: Sometimes being wrong is good news. A new report from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) suggests concern about warming in Antarctica may be overstated. NCAR scientist Andrew Monaghan says that while warming is clearly happening elsewhere, the best climate models consistently show greater heating than has been historically observed. Why the divergence? It seems that the models assume more water vapor in the Antarctic atmosphere than is actually present. (Newswise)

New Climate Supercomputer Made of “iPod Chips”

New concept may provide a powerful platform for climate science.

iPod with Earth image

Researchers at U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are hoping to build a supercomputer a thousand times more powerful than any currently available. That’s the sort of computational horsepower required for advanced climate modeling. Climatologists would like to simulate cloud behavior down to a single kilometer.

Building a conventional computer on this scale is possible, but such a system would literally require enough power to light a small city. There’s also the expense: an estimated $1 billion USD.

But three Berkeley Lab researchers think they have a cheaper, dramatically more efficient solution: a massively parallel array of low-power processors similar to those which run iPods, cellphones, and portable devices. Such chips are already designed to run cool on as little wattage as possible, opening up new possibilities in the development of a supercomputer which is essentially a vast network of embedded processor cores.

Whatever floats your point

In a paper published this week, the Berkeley scientists estimated an “iPod supercomputer” could be constructed for about $75 million. The proposed architecture would be optimized for small processor cores, optimized links, and the requirements of highly parallel applications.

Capitols Get Free Energy Audit From...Wal-Mart?!

Is there anything this company doesn't get itself in to? Wal-Mart just announced that it's selected capitol buildings in 19 states and Puerto Rico to assist with cutting emissions and save on energy costs.

Wal-Mart will actually pay engineers to perform the energy audits and make recommendations for the capitol complexes. Beginning this year and extending through 2009, the engineers will look at lighting, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and other big potential sources for energy savings. The recommendations for improvements will incorporate the technology Wal-Mart has used to make its own stores more efficient.

The states included are: Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The historic city of St. Petersburg in Russia will soon be home to the tallest tower in Europe. The UK-based architectural firm RMJM was given a go by the Russian gas giant to build the new Gazprom Neft headquarters in the former Russian capital. Officially called the Okhta Tower, the eco skyscraper is promising to be “one of the most environmentally sustainable high rise buildings in the world,” according to the RMJM’s press release.

Oregon Partners to Reduce Energy Consumption

Climate Savers Computing Initiative is partnering with the state of Oregon to increase the number of energy-efficient computers and servers in state offices and agencies, while reducing energy consumption by up to 50 percent in the process.
Oregon has pledged to purchase equipment that meets or exceeds ENERGY STAR ratings, while optimizing existing computers with effective power management strategies.

Climate Savers Computing Initiative reports that in a typical desktop PC, nearly half the power coming from the outlet fails to reach computing components and is dispersed as heat and greenhouse gas emissions. Servers are more efficient, but still typically waste 30 to 40 percent of input power.

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative has already received commitments from Minnesota and Kansas, and is working with the National Governors Association to secure more states’ involvement.

To learn more about energy reduction, visit Earth 911’s Energy section. For those looking to upgrade to a more-efficient computer, make sure to recycle your obsolete one using Earth 911’s recycling locator.

ACEEE names 2008's Meanest and Greenest cars

The sold-out Honda Civic GX and the Volkswagen Touareg both took top honors in annual lists announced today by the American Council for an energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The trouble for Volkswagen is that their vehicle topped the list of 2008's meanest vehicles while the Honda was named the greenest vehicle of 2008 (for the fifth year in a row, mind you). Honda and Toyota each scored four of the vehicles on the Top 12 list, with Smart, Mini, Nissan and Ford each netting one. Last year, no American cars were present on the green list.

On the mean side of things we find, mostly, a list of toys for rich people. I mean, how much environmental damage do all the Bugatti Veyrons (#2 on the list) in the world do? Taking sales figures into account would make ACEEE's lists (because the same can be said for the GX) a much more reasonable definition of which cars are mean and which ones are mean. AFAIK, the only mean vehicles with any sort of serious sales are the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the GMC Yukon 2500 and the Hummer H2.

This is the eleventh year for ACEEE's green and mean lists. Vehicles are rated on emissions and MPG ratings. Find the full lists and more details after the jump.
