The origins of Earth Day
Earth Day has grown temendously since it was founded in 1970 by United States Senator of Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson. Gaylord was concerned about environmental degradation and created "one of the most remarkable happenings in the history of democracy," as printed by American Heritage Magazine.
The first celebration 37 years ago drew in over 20 million participants who devoted their day to popularizing the political environmental agenda.
Now, the largest secular holiday in the world, Earth Day brings 175 countries together to work towards environmental conservation, legislation, and appreciation.
