A Bay-area newspaper just published an article linking the impact of the environment to women's health. Hundreds of researchers gathered at a reproductive health conference held at University of California, San Francisco and research prevailed in proving that some of the chemicals we use in our modern world interrupt the normal flow of women's hormones and cause health problems.
The focus was on "endocrine disrupters" which are the chemicals that show up in junk food, common shampoos, detergents or household cleaners, and even in the air. These compounds intervene and confuse the chemical reactions controlled by hormones.
The article goes on to explain the politics involved in bringing research such as this to the forefront. While it is easy to let fear and blame prevail, there is no denying the fact that eating cleansing foods to help strengthen our systems is a positive step to take. In addition, empowering ourselves to make less toxic choices from the foods we eat to the products we buy will help to protect our bodies and take charge of our health.
The article ended with a quote from Sandra Steingraber, an author and ecologist who sums it up best: "We need to start thinking of our reproductive lives as a musical performance. Our bodies are the piano, but the hands are the environment. We are nothing less than the receivers of environmental messages. As that message changes, we are changing ourselves." We could not agree more!
