“When foods are broken down, our body is left with either acid or alkaline residue. I think this is really one of the important cutting edge areas of understanding health and disease.
“Our body wants to be more alkaline, and when fruits and vegetables are broken down in the body, they create a more alkaline residue.
“Refined flour, drugs, chemicals, dairy products, and meats and animal proteins create more acid residues. When we over-consume those foods in relation to our total body, we start to get acidic, inflamed, congested, and toxic. To me, this is one of the keys. When somebody’s going in that spectrum, they need detoxification. They need to lighten up on that excessive amount of food, proteins, refined flour, sugar, medicines, drugs or whatever they’re getting exposed to.
“We want to alkalinize the body. Detoxification is a very generic concept because we say, ‘I want to go on a detox diet’ or ‘I want to detoxify my body’ or ‘I want to cleanse my body.’ It can mean a lot of things.
“In my New Detox Diet book I have three different programs. I have an eating three meals a day program called the Detox Diet, I have a smoothie cleanse, and I have a juice cleanse. People integrate those - they move in and out of them. It’s an alkalinizing of the body.
“When we do that, we start to have many of the symptoms that come from this acid inflammation, which is most chronic diseases, most allergies, skin conditions, mood disorders, ‘itises’ - any kind of inflammatory things, allergies, digestive problems. Then those start to balance.
“I do several groups a year where I take twenty or thirty people and we all go on a detoxified program together. We meet every week or as necessary, and I coach and work with people. And what happens is they say, ‘I’m feeling less inflamed,’ ‘I’m waking up and I’m not congested,’ ‘This is the first time in ten years my wife says I’m not snoring,’ ‘I’m more flexible, when I’m doing my stretching I can go further and my body feels better.’ You start to lighten up, you get rid of the waste in the body. It’s really a wonderful process and experience for people. It’s one of the most rewarding things I do.”
