How Can We Stop Water Pollution? The Shark Tells All

Beth: "Hi. I’m here with Shawn the Shark from Save the Bay. Hi Shawn, can you tell us a little bit about what you do?"

Shawn: "Well, I swim around, but unfortunately my waters are becoming polluted with oil run off and trash and it’s getting harder and harder for me to live, and I’m very injured right now due to pollution in the Bay."

Beth: "What can people do to help save the Bay?"

Shawn: "Well there are many things they can do, very small easy things around the house, such as not washing your car in the front drive way but taking it to a car wash, making sure your car doesn’t leak oil, and being very particular about where you put your trash - make sure it doesn’t flow to the Bay."

Beth: "Great. Those are easy everyday things that we can incorporate into our lives. So, Shawn the Shark, can you tell me, are you worried about the environment?"

Shawn: "Very much so. The natural environment is my home, so it becomes very difficult when humans or other people degrade the environment. It’s my home."

Beth: "Great. Well, thanks for joining us."

Why is Water Pollution Bad?

Wikipedia says:

"Water pollution is a major problem in the global context. It has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily."
"Most water pollutants are eventually carried by the rivers into the oceans. In some areas of the world the influence can be traced hundred miles from the mouth."
"Pollutants in water include a wide spectrum of chemicals, pathogens, and physical chemistry or sensory changes. Many of the chemical substances are toxic. Pathogens can obviously produce waterborne diseases in either human or animal hosts. Alteration of water's physical chemistry include acidity, conductivity, temperature, and eutrophication. Eutrophication is the fertilisation of surface water by nutrients that were previously scarce. Even many of the municipal water supplies in developed countries can present health risks."

Humorous but appetite wetted for more...

Very humorous piece. It would be nice to more beef around this video, err I mean, information from Mr. Sharky about what's happening to our oceans...I thought I'd share this article about how acid levels in our oceans are affecting fish populations: http://www.precaution.org/lib/07/ht070607.htm#Acidic_Oceans_Affecting_Food_Fish
