Cold Medicine and Children—What’s the Bottom Line?

cold medicine

Healthnotes Newswire (November 29, 2007)—Following reports of serious injuries and deaths in children treated with cold medicines, the health community and industry has waited expectantly for the US Food and Drug Administration to weigh in on the issue. The FDA’s announcement in August of its plans to conduct a hearing prompted many manufacturers to voluntarily remove children’s cold medicines from store shelves. Now, the much-anticipated hearing has led the FDA to conclude that, until more research is conducted that shows safety and efficacy, these medicines should not be given to children under two years old unless instructed by a healthcare provider.

By Organic Mom | Nov. 24, 2007 | 2 Comments|post a comment

A journey starts with one step and relating a healthy life style begins a birth. I have never been competitive though I am athletic. So, when I haul my boys, 8 and 10, out for hikes, rowing, swimming, tennis and the play ground I am passing on my life long habits. All the things I enjoy are free and can be done for a life time. Just Say No

By Organic Mom | Nov. 21, 2007 | 3 Comments|post a comment

I was at a formal gather with kids and families as the discussion turned to fast food. Intelligent, educated loving parents said," Yea, some times Joey will only eat McDonald's." They continue to lament how much they hated the "Happy Meal". As my youngest son walked by I asked him to tell the crowd of adults how many times he ate a McDonald's in the last year. He made a face that said Duh only an eight year old could make and said maybe once. He did not eat there because from a young age we told him how bad the food was for his body. And even when the advertisement's call out to him with the latest toy (cause it ain't the food in the Happy Meal he wants) he opted out. I made a deal to give money for a real toy. This is the boy that sings "McDonald's, I'm hating it."

Teaching our kids the beauty of the natural world starts from day one, and we often use positive reinforcement and encouragement to help instill important values: "When you do well in school, you get a gold star. When you do well for the environment, you get a green one!" That's the founding principle behind San Francisco's Little Green Star line of t-shirts for babies and toddlers. Founded just last year by two women who worked together at a local eco-consulting company, LGS features catchy yet educational images printed with non-toxic, water-based inks on sweatshop-free, 100% organic cotton t-shirts and onesies. "We choose to use organic cotton and water-based ink because the have less impact on the environment than conventional products. By making this choice we are protecting our natural resources and supporting sustainability."
