Organic on a Budget...Impossible Task on Food Stamps

I read recently about a few members of Congress who are attempting to subsist on $21 a week, the average amount a food stamp recipient receives.  Fortunately my food budget is higher than that but it doesn't mean that I don't struggle to eat organic and healthy at affordable rates.

Back to Congress....Reps. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., and Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo. are putting their money where their mouths are. They are co-sponsors of legislation that would add $4 billion annually to the $33 billion food stamp program that feeds 26 million low-income Americans -- challenged their colleagues to join them in trying to eat for just $1 a meal.

The bottom line from this experiment:  No organic foods, no fresh vegetables. They alll concluded that it is next to impossible to make healthy choices on a food stamp diet.
