Home Depot announced on June 24, 2008, that they will begin recycling compact fluorescent light bulbs at each of their 1,973 US stores nationwide free of charge for customers. Customers can bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs and give them to an associate at the returns desk. The bulbs wll be disposed of safely by an environmental management company that will ensure environmental compliance.
According to their press release the CFL recycling program is a part of their Eco-Options program, launched in April 2007, which is a classification that allows customers to identify environmentally friendly products.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program, if every American changed one ttraditional incandescent light bulb to a CFL, it would save more than $600 million in annual energy costs and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to that from 800,000 cars.
