Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

By HollyHOW | Jan. 9, 2008 | 1 Comment|post a comment

Reducing, reusing and recycling can have a big impact on our environment. Determine if you really "need" an item before you purchase it and this will reduce the amount of what you will have to discard later.
When you do have to get rid of an item, recycle it. Some great resources for recycling information are the National recycling coalition, http://nrc-recycle.org/ and Earth 911 http://earth911.org/.
Reusing items is a great way to help the environment. Often you can find great ideas at craft or home improvement websites on ways to turn something old into something new and useful! Also donating items to charity you no longer need is a great way to help others and help the environment. There are so many ways you can go green and help the environment, why not start today?

Organic on a Budget...Impossible Task on Food Stamps

By Justin | Jun. 27, 2007 | 0 Comments|post a comment

I read recently about a few members of Congress who are attempting to subsist on $21 a week, the average amount a food stamp recipient receives.  Fortunately my food budget is higher than that but it doesn't mean that I don't struggle to eat organic and healthy at affordable rates.

Back to Congress....Reps. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., and Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo. are putting their money where their mouths are. They are co-sponsors of legislation that would add $4 billion annually to the $33 billion food stamp program that feeds 26 million low-income Americans -- challenged their colleagues to join them in trying to eat for just $1 a meal.

The bottom line from this experiment:  No organic foods, no fresh vegetables. They alll concluded that it is next to impossible to make healthy choices on a food stamp diet.

Green Burials: Rest Naturally...

green burials

This is a somewhat hard topic to write about. After all isn't being green fundamentally about embracing life? Well, perhaps, but taking a holistic approach to life entails facing and planning for the inevitable. And if we really are serious about living green, we ought to embrace resting green as our final mortal act.

As a fan of the hit series HBO series, Six Feet Under, I became intrigued by one of the show's subplots -- the consolidation and corporatization of the burial industry. For example, according to Wikipedia, the Houston-based Services Corporation International is the "largest provider of funeral, cremation, and cemetery services in the US with over 1200 funeral homes, 358 cemeteries and revenues in excess of $1.7 billion dollars. Reportedly the owner of this merchant of death is a close friend of President Bush.

Main Stream

By Organic Mom | May. 24, 2007 | 1 Comment|post a comment

I've finally become main stream. My house is chemical free. We pluck bugs out of the garden and my kids have a release program, don't ask. My foundest days are spent with crab grass and a shovel. I hang cloths out to dry and enjoy the gentle breeze.

We've been semi veggies for the past ten years. Semi means not vegan and every now and than we'll eat meat. We are just about totally organic at this point. I made the final jump recently. Found a company that will ship organic products: my shampoo, and cosmetics to my door, livinggoodorganics.com. I figure if I travel around town to find healthy food I may as well put organic products on my skin, in my hair and in my mouth. Look around your house and see how many things are in product you use that are posoinous. Check out this toxic ingredient directory.
