Persistent concentrations of hormones, antidepressants, and antibiotics end up in our waterways and our drinking water according to the US Geological Survey<!--[if !supportFootnotes]-->Perhaps this is a cheap public health measure for keeping everyone healthy! Unfortunately, a recent study found that a mixture of 13 common medications found in drinking water inhibits cell growth and causes negative changes to human embryonic cells. Simply put, by-products of industrial society are not the only endocrine disruptors; medications for humans and livestock have negative consequences on our health as well. Casual disposal of medicinal hormones creates water-borne pollution. Proper disposal of pharmaceutical medications is a must.

Beth: "Hi. I’m here with Shawn the Shark from Save the Bay. Hi Shawn, can you tell us a little bit about what you do?"

Shawn: "Well, I swim around, but unfortunately my waters are becoming polluted with oil run off and trash and it’s getting harder and harder for me to live, and I’m very injured right now due to pollution in the Bay."

Beth: "What can people do to help save the Bay?"

Shawn: "Well there are many things they can do, very small easy things around the house, such as not washing your car in the front drive way but taking it to a car wash, making sure your car doesn’t leak oil, and being very particular about where you put your trash - make sure it doesn’t flow to the Bay."

Beth: "Great. Those are easy everyday things that we can incorporate into our lives. So, Shawn the Shark, can you tell me, are you worried about the environment?"

Shawn: "Very much so. The natural environment is my home, so it becomes very difficult when humans or other people degrade the environment. It’s my home."

Beth: "Great. Well, thanks for joining us."

“There are a number of myths that people have when you talk about plugging in cars.

“One is that it’s inconvenient.

“It’s just the opposite. You never have to go to a gas station. And once you don’t have to go to a gas station, you never want to go back.

“Another myth is that these are just little golf carts.

“Golf carts aren’t powerful, and we need cars to tow boats and drive through floods and things like that. Electric drive is actually more powerful in terms of acceleration than gasoline cars. Plug-in cars can out-drag Porsches, Lamborghinis, you name it. So power is not the issue.

“Today, many people are conscious of the fact that our world is really very sick. Our waters are polluted - even the food we eat is, half the time, full of chemicals. The land in which we grow the food is sick. And when we use chemicals to treat disease, we’re just making the situation worse.

“We live in cities that are polluted, and even allopathic doctors today recognize that the epidemiology of disease is really becoming alarming.

Air pollutants are an issue in cities and rural areas, and they're a cross-country, international problem. Smog in the United States' Western cities can be partially attributed to coal-burning in China.

Many industrial processes increase air pollution, such as auto emissions, forest fires, and home heating. Air pollution contributes to acid rain, climate change, and poor human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 4.6 million people die each year due to complications associated with air pollution.
