“The very first starting point for me working with anybody is ‘Why are we here? What are the goals?’ And you know what I find as we start to talk? - and it’s so sad to me. Your goals are never going to be bigger than your self-concept, right? And so their goals are truly their limitations.
“When I was working on Dr. Phil, he would always talk about the ‘get real goals.’ ‘Don’t think that you can be like you were in high school.’
“BS is what I say to that. Why can’t you be in the best shape of your life? Why can’t you be better than you were in high school? I am. And I think everybody can. I’m no one special.
“I think when you make a goal it has to be inspiring, it has to be exciting, it has to be big. Who’s inspired by something like, ‘Oh, I need to lose ten pounds. I can’t look great like I used to. But let me lose ten pounds so I can at least get up off the couch.’ Is that really going to motivate you? Why don’t we live large? Why don’t we dream big?
“So it does start with that very beginning of, ‘What if I knew I wasn’t going to fail, if I could have it? What would it be?’ Let’s start there. Now, if they say, ‘I want to be a foot taller,’ okay, we still need to have that part of the ‘get real.’ But I think we should ‘get real inspired’ with our goals.”
