Why Can't You Be in the Best Shape of Your Life?

“It’s always funny to me when people talk about a mind body connection because they’re, to me, one. It’s not that there’s a connection – if you’re not going to wrap your brain around it, your body’s not going to follow.

“The very first starting point for me working with anybody is ‘Why are we here? What are the goals?’ And you know what I find as we start to talk? - and it’s so sad to me. Your goals are never going to be bigger than your self-concept, right? And so their goals are truly their limitations.

“When I was working on Dr. Phil, he would always talk about the ‘get real goals.’ ‘Don’t think that you can be like you were in high school.’

“BS is what I say to that. Why can’t you be in the best shape of your life? Why can’t you be better than you were in high school? I am. And I think everybody can. I’m no one special.

“I think when you make a goal it has to be inspiring, it has to be exciting, it has to be big. Who’s inspired by something like, ‘Oh, I need to lose ten pounds. I can’t look great like I used to. But let me lose ten pounds so I can at least get up off the couch.’ Is that really going to motivate you? Why don’t we live large? Why don’t we dream big?

“So it does start with that very beginning of, ‘What if I knew I wasn’t going to fail, if I could have it? What would it be?’ Let’s start there. Now, if they say, ‘I want to be a foot taller,’ okay, we still need to have that part of the ‘get real.’ But I think we should ‘get real inspired’ with our goals.”

It is possible

I am an example of someone who is in better shape than than I was in high school. Throughout those four years I was in pretty good shape but only did sports so I could get out of PE (just like most lazy teenagers). Then college came around and working out wasn't a graduation requirement, so with all my papers and projects (and yes, some "hanging out"), my freshman 15 came and went pretty regularly. Now a few years out of college and sitting at my computer for hours on end, I realized I need to get outside and be active! So, I'm training for a half marathon in July and a full marathon later this year. Last weekend I ran 10 miles!! Even 6 months ago I never thought that would be possible. So, yes, you can be in great shape if you just put your mind to it. And if you don't believe me, check out The Biggest Loser on NBC and see for yourself that real people are changing their lifestyles and becoming fitter and healthier. I've always been against dieting and "losing a quick 5 or 10 pounds." It's really about incorporating healthy eating and exercise into your daily and weekly routine. Best of luck to all, and thanks, JJ, for pushing back on the "realistic goals" of Dr. Phil. Let's shoot for the stars.

love the spirit!

The stars turn to JJ when they need measurable results (check out what she did for Superman at www.jjvirgin.com). But as she reminds us, it all starts with the critical mental commitment. Thanks for the inspiration, JJ.
