A Slice of Organic Life is a luminous book that not only offers wealth of information about Organic and Natural living, but is illustrated so beautifully that it could grace the top of your coffee table.

Edited by Sheherrazade Goldsmith, this book offers how to on everything from growing salad leaves in a window box to how to churn your own natural butter. This book is for not only for the country dwellers, but also offers information for urban dwellers as well. In the forward, Alice Water explains,

This beautifully illustrated book is a treasury of practical information. The projects that (Goldsmith) proposes are simple object lessons in ecology and conservation that not so long ago were part of our everyday education... Now, with the survival of the planet at stake, we need to relearn these basic lessons in sustainability.

The content is divided into three sections:

No Need For A Yard: This section covers everything from going green in the playroom to checking your labels for toxic levels in your cleaning products.

You'll know a product is toxic if one of the following words, or something similar, is included on its label:

  • Hazardous
  • Corrosive
  • Inflammable
  • Warning
  • Caution
  • Danger
  • Irritant

Roof Terrace, Patio, Or Tiny Yard: Plant vegetables in a "square foot" garden as well as keeping urban honey bees are some of the topics covered in this section

Beneficial Properties of Honey

  • Honey contains vitamin and antioxidants, and enzymes that help in its digestion and is an excellent preservative.

Yard, Community Garden, Or Field: For those lucky few that have land to call their own and lots of it; this section provides how to on going back to the natural living by raising pigs and geeses as well as making your own Organic Drinks. (Cheers Mate!)

Each page is filled with luscious photographs taken by Peter Anderson that will inspire you to live more Organically and take actions to live a more nature filled life. This book has almost a meditative quality based on just pictures alone but the wealth of information provided is an invaluable resource that you will use year after year.

You can own A Slice of Organic Life by ordering it online on Amazon.Com.. I should mention that it's currently on sale. :)

If you would like to get more tips or information; I also posted a review on my Eco-friendly blog, The Accidental Environmentalist.
