Southern California wildfires released almost 8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in just a one-week period, according to researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Colorado at Boulder. This is the equivalent of about 25 percent of the average monthly emissions from all fossil fuel burning throughout California.
Emissions from fires contribute or 4 to 6 percent (290 million tons) of annual emissions in the United States, though in some states fires may account for more carbon dioxide than fossil fuel burning in some years.
