Help for 92 year old with eating disorder needed

By hrhwhittier | Dec. 30, 2007 | 5 Comments|post a comment

My grandmother has been in and out of the hospital with stomach problems.  She won't/can't eat...  nothing tastes/smells good, she just has no desire to eat.  They have tested for everything and say it's just her body shutting down and depression.  Does anyone know of anything that will help increase her appetite?

I had similar problems with my mother

I am so sorry to hear that your grandmother is having trouble with her appetite. I had similar problems with my own elderly mother, although she had cancer, which also affected her appetite. I found that ginger and lemon are really good for stomach problems. There's a great product called "Ginger Wonder" syrup that I put in hot tea or even hot water. It's sweet and the ginger really helped settle her stomach. If your grandmother has trouble eating solid foods, another idea is to make smoothies for her. It might be easier to get down and you can make it so they taste great (unlike those horrid liquid nutrition cans they give people in the hospital!). You can get frozen blueberries or other fruit (fresh is better, but frozen is really convenient) and add milk or almond milk and yogurt or ice cream (whatever she likes!), with nutrient rich supplements like protein powder (I love vanilla flavored Rainbow Light brand), fruit flavored liquid vitamins, Udo's Oil or strawberry flavored cod liver oil (that is in the kids' supplement section of Whole Foods or other natural food stores). With my mom I found adding too much juice to her smoothies upset her stomach, so I added mostly milk or almond milk -- and lots to make the smoothie less thick so it went down more easily. Another thing we did, which you've probably already tried, was to have lots of little meals throughout the day, so there's less pressure to eat a large meal. Good luck with your grandmother. It's so difficult to see a loved one go through this...
