Juice Fasting is for Crazy People

By Mary | Feb. 7, 2007 | 17 Comments|post a comment
Just a few months ago I spoke out loudly against juice fasting.  It's for crazy people, I said.  Who could do that??  With kids, work... Impossible.

Of course, seeing is believing.  Our son's school aide does juice fasting regularly.  And she works right through the fast days without complaint and with a smile on her face.  Hmmmm.... Having such a good example right before my eyes (she looks fabulous) made me soften my stance.

Then my husband came home with a juicing program -- 7 days.  Let's do it together, he said.  I'd been trying to lose those last few pounds of baby weight for nearly 3 years and was ready to try nearly anything.  Besides, I figured he couldn't do it and then I'd be justified giving up too (sad, isn't it?).

Well, juicing turned out to be wonderful.  Both of us felt more energy and lightness than we've felt in ages.  After the first day, having just juice was fairly easy.  We did it the easy way though -- A lovely inspiring guy delivered fresh juices to our door each morning.  The juices were great and varied, so it wasn't boring.  There were lots of fruits and veggies mixed up and designed specifically for liver, kidney, etc. cleansing that we were supposed to drink at particular times during the day.

During the fast I learned that I eat more for comfort and emotional or social reasons rather than because I'm hungry.  The hardest part of the juice fast wasn't being hungry.  I wasn't.  It was the reflexes I had when I cooked dinner for the kids or went out for tea with a friend -- I found it supremely difficult not to reach for the bread or eat up the last bits on my kids' plates...  When I got stressed, the first thing I'd think of was opening the fridge to see what was there.  The fast broke my habits (temporarily anyway) and made me look at why I was reaching for food.

David made it for 6 days and I made it for all 7.  Best part -- even better than the increased energy, good skin, and changing my relationship with food -- losing 10 pounds.  After we finished the fast, I've stayed completely away from fried foods (they made me feel AWFUL after the fast) and mostly away from anything containing added sugar -- and the pounds have stayed off.

Another fast?  We felt so good we're planning another one.  This time we'll juice ourselves (if we find a good juicer -- that's mandatory for a successful juice fast).

I started juice fasting yesterday...

..and I have never felt better. An occasional orange or apple in your "Green" drink would be okay and makes it taste GREAT. Good "Green" drink: Kale (best source of calcium), cucumber, fennel (licorise tasting!), celery, garlic, ginger, lemon, and an apple with some Soy Protein powder. I have the Jack LaLanne's power juicer and it works great! By the way, DO NOT THROW OUT THE PULP! You can mix it in with low fat or fat free sour cream and make an excellent dip or whip up a nice stir fry with it. I make it for the family and they love every minute of it!

Fresh Juice is Essential

Great questions... I'm not an expert, but here are my thoughts and what I've heard. Juice supposedly loses a good deal of its nutritional value not so long after it's squeezed. I've heard with wheatgrass, for instance, that you should drink it within 15 minutes of pressing to get optimal benefit. With other juices, I've heard different theories. If you use a traditional home juicer, the theory is you should drink within 30 minutes or an hour or it loses vitamins. With the big professional juicers, one retailer told me they'd be good for a whole day. Doesn't make sense to me really -- why should there be a difference. So during my juices, I just try to make them fresh if I can -- and if I can't I just make them ahead and take them with me (refrigerated, of course, b/c they can go bad fairly quickly). An expensive, but much easier than home-made, option is to see if there's a local cafe that does fresh squeezed, healthy juices and have them do at least some of your juices for you. There are some cafes/businesses that will even prepare and deliver fresh juices to you. One thing to really keep in mind is not to focus on the tasty fruit juices during a juice fast. Look to kale, spinach, and other green and various colored veggies - and sweeten up with beets and carrots (and the occasional apple), which are high in sugar. Ginger and lemon can also add a really nice taste. A friend of mine drank exclusively fruit juices for 3 weeks (way too long of a juice fast in my mind as well), and turned diabetic. He may have been on his way already to being diabetic, but so much sugar couldn't have been good for him! Fresh is so much better than store bought, because there are more vitamins in it. It's like eating fresh salad versus canned spinach... Also, store bought juices have loads of sugar in them. Makes them taste better, but it's really bad for you and defeats the purpose of the cleanse. With the fresh juice, you can drink it all day if you want -- as long as you're drinking the right kind (veggie, with just a little fruit). It takes a lot of work though -- which is why I don't do it for more than a week at a time and only a couple times a year. So, I generally will have about 7-8 large glasses of juice a day, mixing in between with lots of water and herbal teas (I do cheat and have green tea in the morning for that kick) and sometimes miso soup or avocado (not for my first fast, but since then). Adding a little vegetable protein and good fats (avocados are great for good fats) really helps me through the fast and is probably much better for you. Not sure what the purpose of your fast is...but wanted to mention weight loss versus cleansing (or both). My first fast was to help me rebalance my metabolism and lose weight after having my third child. I was very strict on the fast and didn't "cheat" with avocados or soup, etc. After the third day I felt great, but was ready to quit by the fifth day. I gradually stopped on the sixth day (it's important to go back gradually with adding brown rice and cooked veggies, etc. over the first few days after a fast, and to avoid fried and processed foods). It worked like a charm and my metabolism basically reset itself. I lost about 12-15 pounds over the next 2 months (interesting that it wasn't all at once). My subsequent fasts didn't result in any weight loss -- my cheating (with avocados and miso soup and the occasional raw fruit or steamed veggies) I'm sure had something to do with it (or my metabolism had already gotten to its normal level), but I did feel great and cleansed. So, keep in mind your goals if you try the fast. Hope this helps...

How exactly would the juice fast work?

I'd like to know how the fast exactly works. (Is the juice supposed to be freshly squeezed? or can we just buy the already made ones at the store? Can we drink it more than 3 times a day - like when we're hungry or something? or should there be a limit as to how much juice we drink?) I'm just new to this whole concept of a juice fast, so, I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know... Thank you!!

Great Idea

I'm swamped right now getting ready to go on a family vacation, but promise to get some recipe ideas up when I return. Basically, if you focus mostly on dark green and red (anything colorful) fresh organic veggies, it's best. It's cheapest if you go to the farmers' markets near the end of the day and buy up bruised or damaged produce. We're lucky here to have several farmers' markets throughout the week. I've found that mixing in beet, carrot and apple juice really sweetens up the juices (esp if you use kale and bitter greens that are really good for liver detox) -- and makes them more palatable. Ginger is also a great addition, as is lemon. I just finished today another 7 day juice fast with my husband. Lots of work if you do it alone -- but pair up with someone close by and take turns doing the juicing for the day. If you juice only once a day (or twice) and make a bunch of juices to keep in the fridge with airtight glass containers (we used mason jars), it's easy. If you work, put them in a cooler and haul them into your office. I supplemented this last time with avocado nearly every day, and have to admit that I cheated the last three days by also adding a couple spoonfuls of brown rice. It made the going a lot more easy, but still enabled me to feel great. I'm really addicted I think and am planning to do a juice fast maybe twice a year just to get the gunk out of my system. The other thing I love is that when I break the fast and start eating again, I can really tell what foods my body likes by noticing the reaction I have. I ate a piece of toast today (big no no for me) and felt sluggish fairly soon after eating it. Without the fast, I don't think I would have been able so easily to identify what was causing the sluggishness....

I finished my juice cleanse yesterday

I recommend the Big Mouth Pro juicer - you can find it on Amazon. I did the 10 day juice cleanse for candida and I feel amazing. An important supplement to the juice cleanse is colon therapy and attending a yoga class daily is very helpful as well. Also, make sure you drink plenty of clean water and consider adding a probiotic to your juices.

Love the idea of Probiotics...

What a great idea to add probiotics to the juice! I'm curious what juicing candida cleanse you used... My 6 year old twins were on heavy duty antibiotics when they were babies and their pediatrician thinks they may have a candida overgrowth. I don't want to do a juice cleanse for them, but perhaps I could incorporate some of the juices you used.

I think I just may try this....

But not because I think there is something magical about juice that will "detox" me. I've just found in the past that a short break from eating as ususal causes you to come out at the other end with a new respect for good, solid healthy food and makes you more likely to shun the junk. I'll let you know how it turns out!

I agree

It's been six months now or so and I've still kept off the 12 pounds I lost... AND I eat all the normal things I used to and haven't changed my diet. I felt so good the first time, I'm thinking about doing a spring one again -- for the same reason you mention, to take a break from eating. I love the realization a couple days into the fast that most eating is for emotional reasons, habitual, or just plain stress related. If I could only grab those carrot sticks when I'm stressed rather than french fries!
