My sore feet - please give me advice!

By Beth | May. 14, 2007 | 6 Comments|post a comment

I am training for a half marathon in July and whenenver I get to the 3.5 mile mark on a run, one or both of my feet start to get numb. First, my toes start to get tingly, then my whole foot, then it starts to hurt right where my arch and my heel meet and I just can't go any farther. I've gone through three pairs of shoes and bought orthodics, and it has gotten a little bit better, but it still isn't quite right yet.

I need to be able to make the 13.2 miles by July 15! Has this happened to anyone or does anyone have any advice? Some people have said to eat more potassium, but I hate bananas :). Thoughts?

Thanks so much for all your input and help.

Cured

My feet aren't hurting any more when I run, which is great! I have new Brooks shoes with Superfeet insoles, and I no longer need to tape my feet. Thanks for all the advice!

Update: Taped my feet

I tried taping my feet this morning with basic athletic tape from Walgreens and that seemed to help a lot - not too tight, just once around the center of my foot. It seemed to keep the support without strangling my foot. I'll keep you all posted on if this helps during the longer runs.

High arches

I had problemos of this exact nature when I ran cross country in high school and I'll tell you exactly what my coach told me: you have high arches. The majority of shoes (even running shoes) are designed for people with flat feet. If your arch does not have proper support then a lot of high impact activity will literally flatten out your foot. Not surprisingly this process can cause a lot of pain along the bottom of your foot along with a nice tingling sensation in your toes and the balls of your feet. Unfortunately the only way I know how to help this problem is with equipment. Some shoe companies are more sensitive than others to this condition. From my personal experience here are the best brands: New Balance, Saucony, and MAYBE Nikes. With Nikes it really depends on the model, as they can also be the worst offenders. Insoles can also be great, just be sure to pick out whichever one has the ridiculously high arch. If all else fails, talk to a podiatrist!

make sure you stretch

Grab either a theraband or a yoga rope, lie on your back and place the band/rope around the arch of your foot and point and flex your feet as well as doing small foot circles. Don't forget to breath!!

HI Beth, Have you connected this at all to the type of socks you wear or the tightness of your shoes? Does the feeling change at all when you change either of these factors? keep truckin!

I've switched my shoes three

I've switched my shoes three times and adjusted the lacing, so I don't think it's that. Perhaps I'll try different socks. Do you have any recommendations?
