Switching Light Bulbs: Real or Hype?

By David | Jun. 2, 2007 | 3 Comments|post a comment

Does switching light bulbs - from incandescent to companct fluorescent - do any real good? Os this just a feel good salve that won't make a difference?

Well here are the facts - as reported by the Earth Policy Institute and commented at www.treehugger.com.

  • If the whole world were to make the switch, 270 500 megawatt coal burning power plants could be closed.
  • If the switch happened in the United States alone, we could close 80 global warming sources.

And not suprisingly, other countries are leading the way with real leadership on this no brainer to slow global warming. For example, Austrailia plans to phase out incandscents in favor of compact flourecetns by 2010. And this may be an example of big business lobbying in favor of the public good (of course it will inure to their private benefit). Philips Lighting is advocating that the United States make the mandatory switch by 2016.

That doesn't seem nearly aggressive enough. Isn't this one of those easy measures that scream for a real committment? What do you think?

Dimmer Switching Costs

I love the idea that we can all make a difference by doing something so simple and easy as switching lightbulbs. I've tried this at home and like the new compact fluorescents a lot. The only problem I had is that many of my light switches have dimmers. Fluorescents can't be used with dimmers, they buzz and - I believe - can be a fire hazard. So, wouldn't it be cool if someone figured out how to make a dimmer and Flourescent work together?

Logistics

It seems easy enough to do this, but is it really? Phasing out something like an incandescent light bulb that has been around for years and replacing all of them with CFLs is great, but it will take time - just like anything else. I'm sure there are a bunch of operational and logistical matters to sort out before this can be done. Even though the date to make this happen seems far away, at least they do have a timeline.

I agree it is an easy step

I agree it is an easy step to take and I hate to be the vain one, but the fact is CFLs are ugly and unfortunately to get to the masses, there has to be some aesthetic appeal. Plus, my understanding is the CFLs can' work with dimmers.
