The New Green Pan

green pan

Oh, the woes of Teflon. Dangerously bad for the environment (and potentially humans), but so much easier to clean than stainless steel. Now, the best of both worlds is up for grabs thanks to the Home Shopping Network.

The first cookware to use Thermolon non-stick coating, the new GreenPan line is ceramic based and doesn’t contain any PTFE - the chemical found in traditional degradable coating, or eco-hazzard chemical PFOA. Designed to be the last cookware you buy, this six-piece set doesn’t wear over time and the super non-stick release works up to a sizzling 850 degrees.

Bonus: Throw anything in, and skip the oil. Because nothing sticks, you’ll be cooking up healthier meals minus the once-necessary butters, fats or oils.

$99.90 for 6-piece set on HSN

Better alternatives

Okay, I'm not sure what kind of cookware this is at $99 for a whole set, nor would I ever buy cookware without holding it, feeling it, and asking friends about it, so here are some other (and IMHO - better) alternatives if you're put off by teflon and/or don't want to kill the parakeet in your house, but still want non-stick. 1) Cast iron - use it, love it. this is the ultimate non-stick cookware + has been around for ages. Dirt cheap ($20-$60) depending on size + you can now buy pre-seasoned. http://www.lodgemfg.com/ Available at most cooking stores, except the foofy ones that want you to spend $300 on All Clad - which is fine if your goal is to show off your pans to your friends and tell them you have all clad, and care less about cooking! Healthy too - you don't need to put much if any oil in when you cook. 2) Staub enamelware. What, you want Le Crueset? Please, don't keep listening to those folks at Williams Sonoma, they don't know what they're talking about. http://www.cooking.com/products/shprodli.asp?BrandNo=0207&DeptNo=1000&SubClassNo=1046 Non-stick + heavy + you'll love it. But don't trust me - go to your cooking supply store + check it out. Nonstick, safe, yada yada. Be careful - these things are heavy even empty so don't go buying a Staub that you can't lift. 3) Calphalon Infused Anodized. http://www.calphalon.com/calphalon/consumer/products/subProductLine.jhtml?catId=CLCat100145 Again - a great non-stick surface + no teflon + you can still get a great fond, which you can't get on slippery teflon. Best of all worlds. If for some reason you still want Teflon - yowza - do not buy a low end pan (ala Ikea). Know this -- the high end non-stick pans from Calphalon and All Clad really embed the non-stick material in the core pan, whereas the cheaper pans tend to lose their coatings very quickly - and you know where that teflon is going, right? One final thought - Cast iron is cheap, everything else I suggested is expensive - the good news -- it lasts. So, tell your wife, spouse, husband, parents, boss, friends, truant officer, parole officer, kids, or lover that you're going to throw a dinner party but need them to buy you some fancy new cookware first, and none of that stuff from HSN either...

Common sense.

Why is it that some people believe that to be 'Green' you must be 'alternative' and trendy' - it's just another way of being exclusive. Buying inexpensive (or 'cheap' as some would sneer)products is unacceptable to some because the 'common herd' tend to buy them. Well, maybe they have more common sense. Here we have a Company with a new product that, hopefully, will rid us of Teflon and its PTFE's and PFOA's etc. BUT, they aren't going the usual route and selling expensive to the trendies...Shame on them! Instead, Greenpan has chosen to sell to the masses, thereby selling more and really reducing the numbers of PTFE pans in circulation - now that's what I call radical! Action instead of words, bulldust and endless posturing...Now that's something that'll really shock your parole officer!
