After my underwhelming experience with the allopathic physician and no improvement at all after the shot of cortisone, I decided to try an acupuncturist in San Francisco that I had been referred to. He was a very traditional Chinese practitioner who had been educated in China and in the US and I immediately felt that he was very competent and knowledgeable.
Since I had some trouble with my other shoulder as well, he began by giving me acupressure massage and acupuncture (with an electrical current) on each shoulder. I was very impressed by the amount of time he would spend working on the shoulders during the sessions (which lasted approximately 1 hour and fifteen minutes). He was also quite reasonably priced compared to some of my other practitioners, although my insurance does not cover acupuncture so I had to pay out of pocket.
One of the things he stressed very strongly was that I was not to strain the shoulder in any way and to be very careful picking things up. I tried very hard to do this but I admit that I slipped up a few times picking up my nephews and nieces!
Despite my confidence in the Chinese acupuncturist, after five or six sessions I was still not seeing results and decided to try something even more esoteric to see if I could make some progress. I had been referred to one practitioner in particular that I wanted to try - she practiced oriental medicine along with something called NMT or Integrative NeuroMuscular Therapy. According to a description I read, MNT is a practice based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system maintains homoeostatic balance.
I began seeing the NMT practitioner and am presently still seeing her. Her practice includes what could be called "energy work" which is definitely on the esoteric side of the medical spectrum. For me the jury is still out on how well it works but I will keep blogging and let you all know!
